Appreciating Others Around Us…

Arguing cartoon

Some may remember this story. Not sure where I heard it. But, it’s worth reading again…

“One day, upon the high seas, two men began to argue, (as the manner of men may be), about who was most important. The captain and the chief engineer waged a war of words about their individual worth. Finally, the solution seemed obvious. They would simply change places for the day, and prove the others job was no where near as difficult. Within an hour, the captain emerged from below deck ready to give in. Covered with sweat and grease, he bellowed at the chief engineer……

“Chief you better get down here. I’ve tried everything I know, and I can’t get her to move.”

“Of course you can’t,” replied the chief. “I’ve run her aground.”

It is easy to underestimate the importance of others around us. Too often, we choose to evaluate, rather than appreciate, our co-laborers and fellow workers or teammates. Yet it is important to possess the wisdom to recognize each one has an important and significant role to play. The chief and the captain had to experience such insight, the hard way.

Most worthwhile efforts, and undertakings, demand multiple skills. And though some of us may be very good at somethings, none of us are experts at everything. So appreciation of the talents and gifts of others, can help us to blend our skills to accomplish tremendous feats. Whether in families, at work, or at church, a healthy team is a team that appreciates the contributions of all the team players.
